We never expected the Galaxy Gear smartwatch to be able to make calls, but a Bloomberg report claimed the contrary in a report recently. Well, not that we needed confirmation that the smartwatch would only act as an accessory instead of carrying out the tasks of a phone itself, but The Verge is now reporting that yes, the Galaxy Gear won't be capable of making calls or have a dedicated data connection, as it won't have a SIM card slot of its own.

It's easy to see where talk of the smartwatch being a phone itself would come from – Samsung's S9110 was launched way back in 2009 as a watchphone with calling capabilities. However, looking at how the S9110 was never widely distributed or even known by most people, it's unsurprising that Samsung is not looking to make its first smartwatch take over the 'phone' part of the smartphone that it will pair with via Bluetooth.

The Galaxy Gear will be unveiled on September 4th at Samsung's UNPACKED event in Berlin, and will begin shipping sometime in October. It is expected to sport a dual-core Exynos processor, 1GB RAM, 1.67-inch display of 320×320 resolution, a 2-megapixel camera, and Bluetooth and NFC connectivity.
