Today, Google finally unveiled the long-awaited Android 4.4 KitKat update to the public. And as with every new Android update, it brings quite some changes and improvements over the prior Android version. The new Android 4.4 KitKat update brings improved memory management, a ton of security enhancements, battery life optimisations, a unified SMS and IM system in Google Hangouts, new phone app, Full-screen immersive mode, Low-power audio playback capability and much more.

As you may know, the very first devices to get updated to the latest version of Android are Google's Nexus devices and Play Edition devices. Even though Google unveiled Android 4.4 KitKat today, the actual update hasn't been pushed to any devices yet. Google says that the new update should be available to the Nexus and GPe devices in the coming weeks.

However, Android 4.4 KitKat is already being pushed to AOSP (Android Open Source Project) and the proprietary binaries and factory images should get released anytime now for the Nexus devices. Updates for Google Play Edition devices aren't handled by Google itself, so they always take a little more time than the Nexus devices.

We will let you guys know as soon as Google starts to roll out Android 4.4 KitKat update to the Nexus 10 and GPe Galaxy S4, so stay tuned!

Samsung-office

Samsung SM-P905 has just popped up over at the FCC for some inspection. The tablet has been in the rumour mill for quite some time now and up till now the only hard evidence of its existence was its web profile (UAProf) on Samsung's servers, which also confirmed that the device will feature a massive screen resolution of 2560×1600.

According to the FCC reports, the device will be a part of Samsung's Galaxy Note series due to the presence of the S-PEN slot. The tablet will be featuring Bluetooth 4.0 LE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac and LTE connectivity. And, it looks like the 12.2-inch display rumours might be correct as the device measures 14.1-inches diagonally.

Our insider has confirmed that Samsung will be releasing this tablet in two variants, Wi-Fi-only (SM-P900) and Wi-Fi+LTE (SM-P905). He has also told has that Samsung has just started performing software tests on the tablet itself, so it shouldn't be launching anytime soon.

Samsung gains tablet market share in Q3 2013, achieves year-over-year growth of over 100%

Samsung-Logo-with-Galaxy-Tab_Logo

Samsung already took home the crown of the largest smartphone maker in the third quarter of this year, shipping more devices than most other major manufacturers combined and grabbing 35 percent of the market, and now IDC's latest data reveals that the Korean manufacturer saw an equally impressive growth in the tablet market as well. Samsung's tablet market share gained by 8 percent (to 20.4 percent), and the company shipped 9.7 million tablets, more than double the amount of units shipped in the previous quarter.

Meanwhile, Apple, Samsung's biggest and perhaps only considerable competitor, saw its market share slip from 40 percent to 29.6 percent in 12 months, as its tablet shipments remained mostly the same as the third quarter last year (14.1 vs 14 million). Of course, Apple still reigns supreme when it comes a proper app ecosystem, developer revenue, and consumer engagement, but it shouldn't be long before Samsung is able to become the largest shipper of tablets.

Sprint Galaxy Nexus receiving Android 4.3 update, on Android 4.4 announcement day

android-4.3-easter-screen-feature

You just gotta love North American carriers. Nexus devices are the only safe haven in the Android world where users get instant OS updates as and when Google announces them, but US carriers manage to always take away even that convenience from their consumers. On the day when Android 4.4 is expected to be officially announced, Sprint has begun rolling out the Android 4.3 update (build GJ04) for the Galaxy Nexus. Impressive, isn't it?

The Android 4.3 update isn't a major one, and includes features such as TRIM support for faster and consistent performance, always-on Wi-Fi location scanning (can be turned off from Wi-Fi settings), support for multiple new languages, improved typing, auto-complete in the dialer, and other under-the-hood tweaks.

The update's available over-the-air and should be arriving on your Spring Galaxy Nexus in the next few hours/days, and you can do a manual check for its availability from the Settings » About phone » System updates menu. There's no guarantee the Galaxy Nexus will be getting updated to Android 4.4 KitKat, but even if it does, you can be sure you'll be waiting a few months before Sprint (and other carriers) decide to start its rollout.

Samsung adds more partners to its Wallet service, availability still limited

samsung-wallet

Samsung has announced that it has added support for multiple new services from various partners in its Wallet app (which lets users store and manage tickets, coupons, boarding passes, and membership cards, but doesn't let them make payments like services like Google Wallet). New partners include American Express, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Malaysia Airlines, Amtrak, Valpak, eGifter, Gyft, Yowza, SpotOn, Agoda, HRS, Opodo and Thrillcall.

However, what hasn't changed is the availability of Samsung Wallet service – it still seems to be exclusive to South Korean users, so this update will likely be useless for most people. Samsung is looking to extend support through new partners and merchants with the Wallet Open API, but it will probably be a while before it can match the reach of competing services.

Grab the updated app from the Play Store.

Crowdfunded WiQiQi wireless charging receiver for Galaxy S4 Active cancelled

wiqiqi-feature

Back in August, Monster Watts successfully gathered enough funds from its Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to start working on a back plate attachment for the Galaxy S4 Active to enable Qi wireless charging – called the WiQiQi receiver, to make up for the lack of an official wireless charging-enabled back from Samsung. However, thanks to legal issues, production of the WiQiQi charger has been cancelled.

According to Monster Watts, the legal issues would stem from the water-resistance claims of the Galaxy S4 Active, and legal consultations over the matter has led them to cancel the product altogether (the water-resistance of the S4 Active might be the reason Samsung itself hasn't added wireless charging to it). All those who backed the project will be fully refunded without the need of notifying the company – those that want a standard non-water-resistant wireless charging receiver for their S4 Active can ask for one, and also get $15 refunded along with it, in which case they'll need to write in to indiegogo@monsterwatts.com.

More details can be found at the source link.

Verizon Galaxy S III mini leaks in blue

The Galaxy S4 mini has been out for a few months, and all major US carriers will be launching the device in the coming weeks, but it looks like the Galaxy S III mini from last year still has some life left in it. AT&T recently launched the S III mini, and now it seems Verizon has decided to follow suit, as prolific leakster evleaks has tweeted an image of the Verizon S III mini in blue.

First thing you'll notice is that the Verizon logo is present on the home button, similar to the S4 mini, which is going to put a lot of people off. Like AT&T, Verizon will likely launch the S III mini as a budget model at $0.99 on a two-year contract, with a newer Qualcomm processor (the Snapdragon Plus MSM8930) and a larger battery, so that buyers can enjoy LTE internet speeds. A launch date isn't known yet, but it shouldn't be long before the S III mini arrives on North America's biggest wireless carrier network.

Report: Samsung ready to mass produce curved batteries

Posted by Unknown

galaxy-round-feature

The Galaxy Note 3 comes with a 3,200mAh battery. The Galaxy Round, which has exactly the same specs as the Note 3 except for the lack of stylus support, comes with a 2,800mAh battery. Why? Well, because while the Galaxy Round is curved, its battery is flat and straight like standard batteries, only elongated so it can fit underneath the back cover. This is in stark contrast to LG – its curved smartphone, the G Flex, comes with a battery capacity of 3,500mAh, considerably more than the Round's, thanks to the use of a curved battery.

Now, Samsung might be ready to produce curved/warped batteries as well, according to the Korean media, which means we'll likely see a larger battery inside the company's second-generation curved smartphone. The Galaxy Round's curved display has already been said to be more than just a gimmick, and here's hoping the battery capacity isn't a negative point on the spec list of its successors.

Sprint has announced that it will be launching the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini and Galaxy Mega 6.3 on November 8th, and that both devices will support the new Sprint Spark tri-band LTE network. The Galaxy Mega 6.3 will cost $199.99 on a two-year contract, and sports a 6.3-inch 720p display, dual-core Snapdragon 400 processor, 1.5GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera, and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Samsung might not have been successful in its endeavors to incorporate proper LTE support in its Exynos series of mobile chipsets, but the Korean manufacturer is responsible for Sprint's newly launched TD-LTE network in the US, as confirmed in a press release today. Samsung Mobile will provide radio network infrastructure, as well as implementation services, to deliver faster and more efficient internet speeds to consumers.

"We are honored and proud that Sprint has selected Samsung Mobile to support the implementation of their 2.5GHz LTE-TDD network, following our previous award for the operator's LTE-FDD deployment. This is another proof point for the innovation that Samsung is bringing to the wireless network industry," said Myung-ho Jung, Vice President of Samsung Telecommunications America. Galaxy S5 camera might not have optical image stabilization

Posted by Unknown

Posted by Abhijeet M. on 30 October 2013 at 18:07

logosamsung

Optical image stabilization (OIS) has become quite an important feature on smartphones these days, with manufacturers like Nokia, HTC, and LG having implemented it on their flagship devices' cameras. The Galaxy Note 3 was originally rumored to have OIS as well, and while that didn't pan out, the rumor mill started pointing towards the Galaxy S5 as being the first Samsung flagship that would have OIS (the Galaxy S4 Zoom already has it, but that's more of a camera than a smartphone).

However, a report by ETNews suggests that even the Galaxy S5′s camera might miss out on optical image stabilization, as Samsung's supply partners will be unable to manufacture enough components. For the amount of units that Samsung sells of each of its flagships, that isn't surprising, and the lack of OIS will be quite disappointing (especially if you go by how finicky and shaky the Galaxy Note 3 is when taking pictures, often resulting in blurry pictures).

Samsung has been reportedly looking at producing its own camera modules, and that might be the only way left for them if OIS is a feature they want to flaunt when unveiling their next flagship. Fingers crossed they find a solution in time, instead of making us wait till the Galaxy Note 4.

Sprint now rolling out Android 4.3 update for Galaxy S4

Verizon surprised everyone by becoming the first carrier to roll out the Android 4.3 update for the Galaxy S4, and now Sprint is following in Verizon's footsteps – Galaxy S4 users on Sprint's network can now upgrade to the latest version of Android over the air, and get new features such as faster performance (thanks to TRIM support), Galaxy Gear support, improved camera firmware and features, KNOX functionality, and other minor improvements and tweaks.

The update is rather large at 537MB, so be sure you're on a Wi-Fi network before downloading (unless you're on an unlimited mobile data plan, in which case you have nothing to worry about). As always, the rollout is gradual so you might not see a notification for the update immediately, though you can keep checking regularly from the Settings » About phone » Software update menu.

We know Samsung's latest flagship device – Galaxy Note 3 is doing good in the market and the number confirmed by JK Shin today resonates the fact. At a press briefing in Korea, JK Shin confirmed that they've managed to ship 5 million Galaxy Note 3s to sales channels, carriers etc. Samsung never confirms the actual consumer sales but this figure is also a good proof on the traction of the Galaxy Note 3.

Galaxy Note 3 builds on the success of previous two Galaxy Note devices, which took 5 months (Galaxy Note) and 2 months (Galaxy Note II) to reach the same 5 million shipment figure.

According to Shin, Galaxy Note 3 has seen a good market response compared to its predecessors that brings improved S Pen input along with the new Air Command feature.

It was only earlier this week that we heard of Samsung entering a deal with the National Basketball Association, and the Korean manufacturer followed up by releasing an ad during the first quarter of the Miami Heat's season opener against the Chicago Bulls, starring four-time NBA MVP LeBron James.

The 2-minute video shows LeBron going through various activities and capturing the moments on Samsung devices like the new Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 – 2014 Edition, like hitting a golf ball into the water, video chatting with family, playing hoops in the driveway with his son, and working out with his teammates. It's a nice little commercial that is sure to give exposure to Samsung's already-over-marketed devices, and you can watch it in full right below.

More rumors are cropping up about the 64-bit Exynos processor that Samsung is expected to debut with the Galaxy S5. According to a new report by the Korean media, the 64-bit processor, the first of Samsung's Exynos 6 series of chipsets, will be accompanied by 4GB of RAM, making use of one of the biggest advantages of 64-bit processing support.

Samsung has already beaten other manufacturers by being the first to use 3GB of RAM (on the Galaxy Note 3), and 4GB of RAM would be the next logical step. Personally, I hope that the Galaxy S5 does have 4GB of RAM, as 3GB of RAM hasn't exactly provided the boost in multitasking I thought it would on the Note 3, all thanks to all the unnecessary stuff TouchWiz and Samsung's add-on features keep running in the background, so another gig of RAM would go a long way towards actually showing some advantages of having more memory than normal.

At its first global developer-centric conference in San Francisco, Samsung rolled out five software development kits to lure developers into making apps for its devices, in a move to create a robust ecosystem that enables developers to make use of Samsung's exclusive features. Leading the pack is a multiscreen SDK, which will allow users to share content across various Samsung devices such as mobiles, tablets, and televisions; also included is a multiscreen gaming engine developed in partnership with Unity Technologies that will allow gaming on any Samsung TV paired with a Samsung mobile or tablet.

Other SDKs include the Mobile SDK, which offers more precise S-Pen controls, new visual animations, seamless handwriting recognition, and a multi-window capability that lets you run multiple resizable apps simultaneously; the new Smart TV 5.0 SDK introduces features like close captioning support, broadcasting music to home entertainment systems, and also supports the aforementioned multiscreen functionality. Bringing up the rear is a KNOX SDK, which will allow developers to create apps that work well with Samsung's KNOX security container on mobile devices.

Samsung's often-rumored-but-not-that-anticipated 12.2-inch tablet seems to be inching closer and closer to launch – just a few days after the Wi-Fi model was certified by the Bluetooth SIG, an LTE model, SM-P905V has been given certification as well. The V at the end of the model number makes it more than likely that this is the Verizon model, hinting at Samsung wanting to make its first 12.2-inch tablet quite widely popular.

In a separate part of the world, the international LTE model (SM-P905) was benchmarked on the AnTuTu benchmark site, scoring a rather impressive 35,901 points, thanks to the Snapdragon 800 CPU. AnTuTu also lists other specs – 3GB of RAM, 2560×1600 display, 32GB internal storage, 8-megapixel rear camera, and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, making it more or less a bigger Galaxy Note 10.1 – 2014 Edition. For all those looking forward to the rather large tablet form factor, here's hoping Samsung makes an announcement soon.

Curved screen on Samsung Galaxy Round not a gimmick, says DisplayMate

galaxy-round-feature

Ever since Samsung announced the Galaxy Round, the world's first smartphone with a curved 'flexible' display, almost everyone has written off the curved screen as a gimmick, saying it doesn't offer any advantage for the end-consumer. However, the folks over at DisplayMate, who are considered the experts on mobile displays and came away impressed with the Galaxy Note 3′s display, think the curved screen is actually more than a gimmick.

"There is widespread misunderstanding regarding curved displays. They aren't simply a marketing gimmick as has been widely reported," Raymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies. According to DisplayMate, the curved 5.7-inch OLED display on the Galaxy Round has multiple benefits, such reduced reflections and glossiness, and a visually striking experience thanks to the use of a plastic substrate for construction.

Here's a rundown on DisplayMate's findings:

  • Concave screen: The curvature on the Galaxy Round is fairly small — the left and right edges of the screen are just 2.66 mm (0.10 inch) higher than the center. "So the effect is subtle, but it's very important."
  • • Improved screen privacy: Screen privacy is improved because the curvature makes it harder for other people to see the screen.
  • • Lower reflectance: A curved screen cuts down on reflections. The curvature directs reflected ambient light "coming from behind away from the viewer's line of sight. This is very important because you want to minimize the amount of ambient light that is seen reflected off the screen." The screen also magnifies the size of objects reflecting off the screen which "substantially cuts down on the interference of light reflections."
  • • Glossiness reduction: Flexible OLED displays are manufactured using a flexible plastic substrate, "so they don't have the glossy cover glass used on virtually all existing mobile displays." And without the cover glass, the OLED display appears to be right on the surface of the screen, which is "visually striking."

Of course, these advantages of the curved screen will extend to LG's G Flex as well, which LG launched as a competitor to the Galaxy Round a couple of days ago, and DisplayMate's conclusion should help hold the naysayers and detractors at bay. We're working on our review of the Galaxy Round, in which we'll be sure to let you know our own experience on the curved display.

AllTheNotifications Manager enables full content notifications for most apps on Galaxy Gear

For a smartwatch that is supposed to be an extension of your smartphone and let you know of various notifications right on your wrist, the Galaxy Gear is surprisingly limited, with only text and email notifications showing the full text of the message. However, this is more a limitation of Samsung's notification service on the phone rather than the watch's, and to overcome this limitation, XDA forum member Sepiroth887 has released AllTheNotifications (ATN) Manager.

What ATN does is let you select which apps send a full notification to the Gear, so you can check out the entire content of a particular notification. It's as simple as it gets and works quite well in our own testing, though currently ATN Manager sends notifications to the watch even when we're using our Galaxy Note 3, which shouldn't happen; also, some apps don't work too well with ATN, though that will likely be fixed in future updates.

Screenshots_2013-10-26-14-57-26Screenshots_2013-10-26-14-57-54

To use ATN Manager, you'll need Android 4.3 and a supported device, like the Galaxy Note 3, Note 10.1 – 2014 Edition, or the Galaxy S4, after which it's simply a matter of installing the app, launching it and then selecting the apps you want to get notifications for. Do not foget to give the app Notification acces in the security settings.

Hit the source link for the details, and make your Galaxy Gear much more useful than it currently is.

Samsung selling 1 million mobile devices a day

Posted by Unknown

logo-samsung-1-feature

Samsung is currently the largest manufacturer of Android devices in the world, that's not a secret. But how many smartphones and tablets are they actually selling each day? Well, according to Samsung executive vice president David Eun, the Korean company is selling a whopping 1 million devices every day, which equates to more than 350 million devices every year.

That's an impressive figure to say the least, and is likely helped by the fact that Samsung has multiple devices at each price point. Samsung's next step is to get these devices connected together, and the launch of multiple new developer SDKs should go a long way towards that goal.

Samsung has started rolling out a new software update for its international Snapdragon 800 Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N9005). The UDMJ6 is a stability update available to Galaxy Note 3 users over-the-air and it brings in some performance improvements including a confirmation on the Reactivation Lock feature which will now be turned off by default.

Reactivation Lock is a feature implemented by Samsung to thwart attempts for an unsolicited factory reset. In case, a factory reset happens from the Android recovery, the device detects and asks for the Samsung account details to proceed. It's a handy feature if you ask us and if you haven't activated, you can manually activate it by going to Settings > General > Security.

Some of the other improvements in the new software update include a paintjob for Samsung's stock keyboard and some fixes like reactivating one-handed windowed mode and direct pen input after starting Pebble's accessibility service.

According to a study released by Strategy Analysts, global smartphone shipments reached an all-time high in the third quarter this year, with more than 250 million devices shipped in what was a 45 percent increase over last year, and Samsung took the lead with a whopping 35 percent of the market share.

Samsung grew by 55 percent and shipped a record 88.4 million smartphones, more than double of Apple's 26 percent growth compared to the same quarter last year. "Samsung shipped over two times more smartphones than Apple during the quarter," Neil Mawston, Strategy Analytics executive director, said in a statement. "While shipments of the flagship Galaxy S4 model softened, solid demand for the new Note 3 phablet and for mass-market devices like the Galaxy Y helped to lift Samsung's volumes."

Samsung Galaxy NX with AT&T LTE support visits the FCC

galaxy-nx-feature-1

Samsung had announced back in August that the Galaxy NX, its Android-powered mirrorless camera, would be arriving in the U.S. in October, but it's a schedule that Samsung might not be able to meet as we approach the end of the month. However, it shouldn't be long before the camera becomes available, as it has recently visited the FCC seeking certification for being used on American carriers' networks.

This particular model comes with support for AT&T's LTE and HSPA bands, so AT&T should be at the forefront of carriers that will be making the Galaxy NX available for consumers. Again, since October will soon be coming to a close, we're unsure when North American folks will be able to get their hands on one, though we'll be sure to let you know whenever it becomes available.

Android 4.3 update for Verizon Galaxy S4 rolling out

android-4.3-easter-screen-feature

Well, in a rather surprising turn of events, Verizon has beaten other carriers and become the first to start rolling out the Android 4.3 update for the Galaxy S4, as was expected when the update's details were made available just a few hours back on Samsung's website. In addition to inherent features of Android 4.3 (though there's no OpenGL 3.0, as the S4′s GPU doesn't support it on the hardware level), the update will add support for the Galaxy Gear, enable Band 4 LTE, update the Group Play app, improved Easy Mode, KNOX support, and a few other tweaks.

The update is available over-the-air right now, but in case you haven't received a notification yet, be sure to hit the Check now button in the Settings » About phone » Software update menu.

[Update: Fake] New Nexus 10 listing shows up on Play Store, reveals specs similar to Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition

Posted by Unknown on Monday, October 28, 2013

Google-Nexus-10-2013-specs

Update: According to PhoneArena, the original source of this info, the listing is a fake, as it was apparently sent to them by a tipster with a poor track record of accurate news.

While Google's original Samsung-made Nexus 10 tablet never caught on in the market, the search giant has still been working on a successor, with Android head Sundar Pichai revealing at Google I/O that an upgraded model was on its way. Now, it looks like the new Nexus 10 – 2013 Edition if you like – could be launching very soon, as it was briefly listed on the Google Play Store earlier today.

As expected, the specs are pretty similar to the Galaxy Note 10.1 – 2014 Edition, which in turn shared the original Nexus 10′s one defining feature – the incredibly sharp 2560×1600 display. That display is back in business on the new Nexus 10, and the tablet will also become the first Nexus and first non-Nexus device to sport 3GB of RAM. Other specs include a Snapdragon 800 processor (which indicates it will have LTE connectivity, or Samsung would have used its Exynos chip instead), 8-megapixel camera, 32GB internal storage, 9,500mAh battery, and Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box.

Google-Nexus-10-2013-specs

Of course, given how poor the 10-inch tablet ecosystem currently is on Android, with most apps simply being blown up versions of their phone counterparts, the new Nexus 10 will likely be a dud in the market as well. But for those that are interested, this accidental reveal of the device on the Play Store gives a pretty neat picture of what to expect from the new upgraded 10-inch Nexus.

Anyone excited for this thing?
