Samsung is expected to update the Galaxy S4 to Android 4.4 KitKat in January next year, but if you can't wait that long and are willing to try out a custom ROM that takes away all the features Samsung's puts on its devices, then you can try out Android 4.4 on your S4 right away, thanks to an unofficial CyanogenMod 11 build released on XDA.

As expected at such an early stage, the ROM has quite a few issues – here's the official list:

  • - Device has a problem connecting to internal and external storage
  • - Rotation is not working
  • - Images doesn't display in gallery app
  • - No haptic feedback
  • - Low mic volume
  • - Sound base weird noise
  • - Touch buttons back and options wake the device up
  • - Voice recorder doesn't work
  • - Apps have problems with storage
  • - No video recording
  • - some other bugs

A long list of issues that make the ROM totally unsuitable for daily use, but those willing to test it can do so at the source link. The ROM seems to be for the Exynos variant of the phone, which means the kernel sources Samsung released for the Google Play Edition of the S4 today might not come in too handy for ironing out the problems, at least not immediately.
