Yes, folks, you read that right. There's the original Galaxy Grand, the just announced Galaxy Grand 2, and in a couple of months, there will be another Galaxy Grand sandwiched in between, dubbed the Galaxy Grand Lite (GT-I9060), according to one of our insiders. The device will be announced at the MWC in late January, and is something of a cross between the two – it will have a 5-inch WVGA screen, 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB internal storage with microSD slot, and a 2,100mAh battery.

Where it differs is the camera and Android version. The camera is expected to be a 5-megapixel unit on the rear and a very standard VGA camera on the front; our insider says the phone will run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean – that's probably just temporary, and the final product should have at least Android 4.3 out of the box. Dual SIM support is pretty much a given as well, as the Galaxy Grand has been a success in markets where phones with two SIM slots are quite popular (such as India and China), though that's something we can't confirm at this point.

trend-lite

The Galaxy Grand Lite will be available in white, "Midnight Black", "Lime Green", and orange, from somewhere around the fifth week of 2014. Why is Samsung making a Galaxy Grand Lite? Well, that's a tough question to answer – it looks like the Korean company is taking things a step further when it comes to having multiple variants of their devices, this time extending the tradition to a device that comes somewhere in the lower mid-range spectrum of the market. It's not a move that makes any sense to us, but hey, we aren't making the decisions over at Samsung HQ.

Yesterday, we reported that Samsung will soon be unveiling the Galaxy Note 3 in two brand new colours, Red and Rose Gold. And today, Samsung Argentina updated its Galaxy Note 3 product page with both of the new colours. There are no differences in specifications between the new colour variants and the old ones, except the colour difference obviously.

The Red variant will launch in the first week of 2014, while the Rose Gold version will follow two weeks later – these are tentative time frames, but you can expect both new colour variants to be out in the market by the end of January. According to our source, availability will be worldwide, though it's possible we might see retailers and carriers getting an exclusive claim on the new colours for a particular period of time (especially in the US).

We must say the Red variant of the Galaxy Note 3 looks stunning! What do you think about the new Galaxy Note 3 colours?

Here's another nice Black Friday deal, this time from the largest carrier in the US. The Galaxy Note 3 is currently only $199.99 on a two-year contract from Verizon, a $100 discount on the usually steep $299 price tag; an outright purchase will cost you $599. If a phablet isn't your thing, then Verizon also has three Samsung tablets on a $150 discount: the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, and Galaxy Note 10.1. Not exactly comparable to the Note 3 in hardware, but hey, a discount's a discount, right?

Galaxy S Duos 2 to cost Rs 11,230 ($180) in India

samsung-galaxy-s-duos-2

We saw the specs and pictures of the successor to the Galaxy S Duos leak yesterday, and now an Indian retailer has revealed the price of the smartphone. The phone will be available in India in a few days with a price tag of Rs 11,230 (~$180), which is considerably less than the starting price of the original Galaxy S Duos, an indication that Samsung is slowly understanding the importance of pricing such low-end handsets more sensibly, especially in a market like India where low-end devices are what are driving smartphone growth, and where the original S Duos was a considerably success.

If you missed the leak about the device yesterday, the Galaxy S Duos 2 is expected to sport a WVGA (480×800) 4-inch screen, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 768 MB RAM a 5-megapixel camera, 4GB internal memory, a microSD slot, 1,500mAh battery, and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean (possibly with features like Multi Window, which are usually reserved for the high-end/large-screen Galaxy phones). Not exactly the greatest specs, but again, at least the price will be more suited to what's on offer.

Anyone looking to pick one up?

Samsung resumes Android 4.3 update rollout for Galaxy S4 worldwide

android-4.3-easter-screen-feature

Good news everyone, it seems like Samsung has started rolling out the Android 4.3 update for the Galaxy S4 once again. AT&T confirmed the same for its variant earlier, and now the update is showing up in some European nations, including Germany, France, and the UK. The update's notification terms it as a stability update, which is pretty spot on considering it is expected to fix the issues that caused the original 4.3 update to be pulled, leaving everyone waiting yet again after the initial year-long wait.

The build number accompanying the update is I9505XXUEMKE, and the build date is of November 27th, which means it is the most recent firmware available for Samsung's flagship smartphone. The update seems to be available only on Kies at the moment, but it should be making its way to devices over the air in the coming days. Don't forget to do a manual check in the Settings » About phone »  Software updates menu, though as always, the update will reach your device of its own accord.

Samsung: Tizen and Firefox could be powerful allies against Android and iOS

Posted by Unknown

Posted by Abhijeet M. on 29 November 2013 at 8:41

tizen

Samsung has big plans for Tizen, the mobile operating system it is jointly developing with Intel, that's no secret. But, if the words of a Samsung executive are to be believed, those plans might also include the usually unthinkable act of joining forces with a rival operating system. At the Conference for establishing HTML5 Fusion Technique, Wonsuk Lee, Chief Secretary of Samsung, expressed interest in teaming up with Mozilla and bringing Tizen and Firefox OS closer together, due to the support for HTML5 development on both operating systems.

Sure, Firefox OS is a rather tiny rival OS for Samsung, considering the fact it's aimed at low-end devices, but it would be a rather interesting move for the Korean manufacturer, especially since its looking at making Tizen run great on low-end hardware as well. Samsung believes both Tizen and Firefox could grow to a point where they could compete with iOS and Android, and the common development platform would offer a great boost to the ecosystems of both Tizen and Firefox. It's a far-fetched idea, and Mozilla would likely want to push on with Firefox on its own, but it's an idea that would be beneficial for both companies.

What do you guys think? Should Tizen and Firefox join forces, or should Samsung just not bother about the latter?

netherlands-note-3-deal

Samsung Netherlands has a great offer upcoming in, well, just a day. Those who buy a Galaxy Note 3 from one of the participating stores in the country will receive a free 64GB microSD card worth €50, and even better, get €125 of the price of the handset refunded within 15 days, after a buyer registers the device online, then sends in a printed copy of the IMEI number on the device box and the sales receipt.

That's as good a deal as you'll get on one of the best, but also priciest, smartphones launched this year. For Vodafone customers, there's an addition discount - Vodafone Red Essential subscribers will just have to pay €45 per month instead of €54, with the device itself being free of any upfront payment. The source link has all the details you'll need, don't forget to give it all a read and be prepared for the deal to go live tomorrow.

It came, then it disappeared, but now it's back again. As you already surmised from the title, the Android 4.3 update for the AT&T variant of the Galaxy S4 is now back in circulation and making its way to users of the device over the air. AT&T doesn't mention what issue caused the update to be pulled last time, but then again, as long as users can start upgrading to the much-awaited new version of Android once again, we shouldn't be hearing any complaints on that.

As a refresher, the Android 4.3 update adds Galaxy Gear compatibility, faster performance and improved RAM management, new camera firmware and modes, KNOX security support, and more. AT&T suggests to check for the update in the Settings » About phone » Software updates menu, though as always, you might have to wait a couple of days before the update shows up on your device.

Galaxy Note 3 to launch in Red and White Gold colors in early 2014

feature-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-31

Compared to the Galaxy S4, the Galaxy Note 3 was launched in the standard black and white color options that we see on many smartphones. There's a pink variant too, but that one is pretty hard to find and exclusive to particular retailers. But fret not – if you're willing to wait till January, you will be able to buy Samsung's latest phablet in red or White Gold, according to information provided to us by our insider.

The red version will launch sometime in the first week, while the White Gold variant will follow two weeks later – these are tentative time frames, but you can expect both new color variants to be out in the market by the end of January. According to our source, availability will be worldwide, though it's possible we might see retailers and carriers get an exclusive claim on the new colors for a particular period of time (especially in the US).

As always, there will be no change in specs – you'll get the same awesome phablet that puts other phablets to shame, but you'll be able to dazzle your friends and family with the flashy new colors. That's worth the wait, right?

Every retailer and carrier has special deals on mobile devices going on during Black Friday, but what exactly is Samsung itself offering on this holiday weekend? Well, sadly, the Korean firm doesn't have any deals on its phones, but you can get the rather costly Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition for $50 less than the official price – the 16GB variant is available for $499.99, while the 32GB model is priced at $549.99.

There's also a $50 discount on the Galaxy Camera, the company's first Android-powered camera that launched a year ago. Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 with TD-LTE support certified in China

China Mobile, China's and the world's largest mobile carrier (in terms of subscriber base), is set to launch its TD-LTE network on December 18 this year, in the country's bid to move to faster internet networks. Apple's new iPhones are rumored to be launching on the same day on China Mobile with support for the new network, and now it turns out Samsung isn't going to be too far behind – TD-LTE-enabled variants of both the Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N9008V) and Galaxy S4 (GT-I9508C) have been certified by TENAA (China's equivalent of the FCC) recently, and could launch alongside the iPhone before the year ends.

China's upcoming 4G networks are expected to be one of the factors driving smartphone growth in the future (as the Western world faces saturation, especially in the high-end smartphone market), so the move to get both the S4 and Note 3 certified for the world's largest carrier's 4G network isn't a surprising one. Both devices have already sold in the millions, and the launch on China Mobile might just add a few more million to those sales figures.

Samsung Galaxy S4 and S4 Active available for free from Best Buy (with 2-year contract)

galaxy-s4-diagonal

It's Black Friday, and that means you can get quite a few great smartphones at prices lower than the standard prices. For those looking for a flagship device, Best Buy has an amazing deal going on – you can buy the Galaxy S4 for a zero upfront fee on a two-year contract on carriers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint, in white, black, blue, purple, and red colors (with the latter two exclusive to Sprint and AT&T, respectively). The Galaxy S4 Active is available for free as well, though only with an AT&T contract and in the color blue.

For those somehow unaware of the specs of the Galaxy S4 and S4 Active, here's a reminder: the S4 sports a 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 5.0-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, 13-megapixel rear camera, NFC and LTE connectivity, a 2,600mAh battery, and runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, with an update to Android 4.3 available. The S4 Active has the same specs, but is somewhat of a downgrade in the camera and screen department: there's only an 8-megapixel camera and the screen is an LCD unit, though it makes up for those with its water- and dust-resistant construction.

Hit the source link to buy either device from Best Buy.

No Optical Image Stabilization for the Galaxy S5

Today the Korean website ETnews rumoured that the Galaxy S5 might not have OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) after all, one of the reasons are Samsung's own hardware components supply. The Galaxy S5 is rumoured to be announced sometime in March – April. The Korean website also said Samsung will not get all the hardware components in time which will result in a missing OIS for the Galaxy S5. They followed the report by saying all their high-end devices  might get OIS in the second half of 2014, this could be for the Galaxy Note 4.

Yesterday ETnews also rumoured some of the device specification of the Galaxy S5.
The overall specifications of the Galaxy S5 are: a 64-bit  Exynos or a Snapdragon processor, it will pack 3 GB of RAM, a 16 MP camera, a 4,000 mAh battery, and it will run on Android 4.4 KitKat (presumably covered with a new version of TouchWiz).
This source claims that there will be a "Premium" model sporting a metal case, and a flexible OLED and one "normal" version sporting a normal OLED and a plastic chassis.

We can't wait to see the Galaxy S5 Samsung next flagship product!

Galaxy S5 to hit massproduction in January and to come in two versions?

Posted by Unknown

samsung-logo

The rumour mill is beginning to spin at full speed, today the Korean site ETNEWS is throwing something rather interesting to the table.

After the disappointing sales ot the Samsung S4 and because of that the rumour the Galaxy S5 was releasing in January, to compete with their rivals 6 months device update strategy. Now there is a new rumour claiming that the Galaxy S5 will come in two version and will hit mass production somewhere in January. And is scheduled to release somewhere in March or April.

As they normally enter mass production in March / April they are 3 months ahead of schedule.

Samsung will start producing an amount of 800.000 to 1 million units in January, and will ramp it up to 6 million units somewhere in February. This is due that Samsung is targeting 70% of their sales from the S4. Is this something they do on purpose because of the saturated high-end market?

Anyone here getting the S5 when Samsung drops it in a shop near you?

If you are a Galaxy Gear owner you might have noticed that Samsung has pushed out great update to get more notifications on your smartwatch. One of the big negatives of the Galaxy Gear were the lack of notifications. A second problem was that people didn't like the thickness of the Galaxy Gear. According to a ETNEWS Samsung is busy with the next generation of their Galaxy Gear smartwatch. This might sound to early but if Samsung creates a great cash back who cares? The next Galaxy Gear is rumoured to be 15% to 20% thinner than previous version. Which is great cause the current variant is a slightly to thick.

According to ETnews Samsung is having plans to release the next generation of the Galaxy Gear alongside with the Galaxy S5, which was in the news today. The Galaxy S5 is rumoured to come around 2014 March – April like Samsung did by the Galaxy S4 this year.
Samsung already shipped 800.000 times the Galaxy Gear.

SamMobile actually liked the Galaxy Gear pretty much. SamMobile's co-founder wrote his own opinion about the Galaxy Gear at our column page.

From G-Shock to Galaxy Gear in 2 months.

Posted by Unknown

Posted by MartinR on 27 November 2013 at 11:35

galaxy-gear-official-1-feature

So the Galaxy Gear is a test product from Samsung, which was burnt to the ground when it was released, by critics everywhere.

We at SamMobile always saw its full potential, but after 2 months do we still think it is as good as we thought it would be and do we still use it?

Well, in everyday use I really, really like the gear, I use it every day. Before the Gear I was a G-Shock guy, but ever since I got the Galaxy Gear I never wore my G-Shocks again (sorry Casio).
The Galaxy Gear makes me more social to my surroundings (the phone addict as I am), as weird as this may sound.

But picture this: You`re in a restaurant with your girlfriend and you will get a notification. The first thing you do is to get your phone out of your pocket, unlock it and swipe down its notification panel. Than you see that it was a spam mail, all this you do while looking at your phone and not at your girlfriend.

Now with the recent update the Galaxy Gear got, it will go like this. You will get a notification, you will flick your wrist, and you see that it is a SPAM mail. As you can see this will take half of the time you need when taking out your phone out of your pocket and do all those aforementioned steps.

I use my phone as a MP3 player as well, and I travel a lot with public transport. Skipping tracks was quite a hassle before I used the Gear. This is something I realised last week, while I was taking the Tube here in the Netherlands. At the opposite of where I was sitting there was a guy with an iPhone: he had to take his phone out of his pocket to select another track, before which he needed to disturb the guy who sat next to him to get his phone out of his pocket.

The way I do it now is to wake my watch and go to the media controller and skip the tracks there. This is without taking my device out of my pocket and without disturbing anyone. One point of criticism is that you can't select albums , you only can skip tracks ( Nothing what an update can't fix, right? Samsung, are you reading this?)20131126_145424 (1)

We all have these situations that we want to take a picture of the moment as quickly as possible. I went to an indoor play hall with my son. There was a moment that he was in a tank with a lot of colored little balls – this was a very nice picture to take, but I needed to take out my phone, unlock it, start the camera then take the picture. As you can guess the moment was long gone.

Than I went to the same place when I had my Gear, my son was in the same tank in pretty much a similar moment as before. This time I flicked my wrist, swiped down to get to the camera, pointed and took a shot, and tada, I now have that moment captured in a picture.20131107_125743

"This is a short story on how I use my Gear. As you can see it a nice addition to my phone, which due to my watch lives longer as I wake my device less than I used to before, which in turn keeps the screen off more than it used to. The Gear is something thing I really love – it has customisable watch faces, so when I go out on dinner with my girl I can set a really fancy watch face. Not to mention the Hands-Free capabillity when you're driving a car (as I do not have a carkit). The only set back is charging, as I can go 2 full days or more, on a full charge. You need to bring the cradle everywhere you go cause you will forget it sometimes. Samsung could have placed a second one in the box in my opinion, one for at work and one for at home"

My battery after 1 day of medium usage.

All in all, the Galaxy Gear is a great mobile device to have, and I'm not sure I'll be able to live without it anymore. Nice job, Samsung!

T-Mobile Galaxy S4 to start getting Android 4.3 from today

android-4.3-easter-screen-feature

T-Mobile has announced that it will be pushing out the Android 4.3 update to the Galaxy S4 starting today, upgrading the device to build number M919UVUEMK2. The 781 MB update will be rolling out between today and all the way through February 1, which is quite a long time to be waiting for any update, though thankfully T-Mobile itself suggests that those unwilling to wait can manually update via Kies.

The Android 4.3 update brings support for the Galaxy Gear, KNOX, performance improvements and better RAM management, new camera features and firmware, two new home screen modes, visual touches to the interface, and improvements to T-Mobile's Visual Voicemail and ISIS apps. Your S4 will have to be on build M919UVUAMDL if you want to get the OTA update, though others, as mentioned above, will be able to do it manually via Kies, or by downloading the firmware from our firmware section.

Samsung to offer customized phones for corporate clients

Samsung is looking towards new avenues for strengthening its hold on the enterprise market. After developing the well-received KNOX security suite, the Korean company is reportedly working on creating personalized smartphones for corporate professionals. "We are actively approaching companies which have big distribution channels like FedEX, Pepsi and Coca-Cola. Simply put, delivery systems in those companies could be effectively controlled by our customized devices," said one Samsung official in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, where Samsung's main technology compound is located.

Samsung didn't exactly say how these devices will be customized, though there's a hint of personalized hardware specs and features from the report. Samsung believes it's a necessary step in order to increase their presence in the enterprise market, even with sales of its smartphones going strong otherwise. "That's why Samsung is spending more efforts on developing smartphones for corporate clients. And we are seeking partnerships with global players, such as FedEX, Pepsi and Coca-Cola to raise our leverage in the lucrative B2B sector," another official said.

Galaxy S5 to come with built-in multi-party conference call feature?

multi-party-conference-call-samsung-galaxy-s5

As is the case with every new flagship smartphone released by Samsung, the Galaxy S5 will likely feature numerous new software features to enhance the user experience, and we might just have a glimpse of at least one such feature – built-in conference calls capability (with video support) between multiple persons. A document filed to the Korean Intellectual Property Rights Information Service shows the interface for such a feature.

By what is shown in the app portrayed in the pictures you see, it would seem users will be able to use both the front and back camera at the same time when in a video call conference, while also being able to see the video feeds of others at the bottom of the screen. It's possible the feature might come as an update to ChatON, which already does allow one-way conference calls – the option to have multi-party calls would give Samsung a nice feature to boast about on its messaging app, though whether it debuts on the Galaxy S5 or through a software update to ChatON before that is something that remains to be seen.

Samsung Galaxy Round sales said to be less than 10,000 since launch

It looks like Samsung's excursions into new product categories in the mobile market aren't working out so well. A lot of hoopla was made about the Galaxy Gear's sales being abysmal worldwide recently, and now, according to a different report, sales of the Galaxy Round have been even worse, with only around 10,000 units apparently sold since launch.

The reason for the lukewarm (or should it be cold?) reception is attributed to two things: the lack of availability of the device on demo shelves in most stores, and also the fact that while folks do come and try out the device out at stores, it's mostly out of curiosity for the strange form factor, curiosity that isn't turning into sales. This isn't surprising, as the high cost and lack of compelling reasons for that curved display are something that will deter most of spending their cash on the device, so it seems Samsung will have to come with something much better and sensibly priced with the second-generation Galaxy Round, including availability in more than just the company's home country.

Samsung’s ChatON messenger app gets SMS and MMS support

Google recently added the option to view SMS on a device via the Hangouts app (which was earlier called Talk), a feature that had been requested by Android users for quite some time. Well, Samsung decided it needed to do the same for its own chat app – the Korean firm's ChatON messaging app has received an update that adds both SMS and MMS support for Samsung devices on Android 4.0 and above.

Text messages exchanged with a user will be shown along with those sent over the internet in a combined chat list, though I was personally unable to see how this works since neither me or my friends ever use ChatON. The update is available on the Play Store and on Samsung Apps, though for now Samsung mentions that it works best on the Galaxy S III, S4, Note II, and Note 3.

Unofficial CyanogenMod 11 build brings Android 4.4 KitKat to Galaxy S4

Posted by Unknown

cyanogenmod-10-banner-600

Samsung is expected to update the Galaxy S4 to Android 4.4 KitKat in January next year, but if you can't wait that long and are willing to try out a custom ROM that takes away all the features Samsung's puts on its devices, then you can try out Android 4.4 on your S4 right away, thanks to an unofficial CyanogenMod 11 build released on XDA.

As expected at such an early stage, the ROM has quite a few issues – here's the official list:

  • - Device has a problem connecting to internal and external storage
  • - Rotation is not working
  • - Images doesn't display in gallery app
  • - No haptic feedback
  • - Low mic volume
  • - Sound base weird noise
  • - Touch buttons back and options wake the device up
  • - Voice recorder doesn't work
  • - Apps have problems with storage
  • - No video recording
  • - some other bugs

A long list of issues that make the ROM totally unsuitable for daily use, but those willing to test it can do so at the source link. The ROM seems to be for the Exynos variant of the phone, which means the kernel sources Samsung released for the Google Play Edition of the S4 today might not come in too handy for ironing out the problems, at least not immediately.

The Galaxy S4 mini has been slowly but steadily making its way to various carriers in the US, and after being launched by Sprint and Verizon, the mini Galaxy S4 is now available from US Cellular. The price is set at $49.99 for a two-year contract, while the off-contract price is $499.99, which, for some reason, is considerably higher than the standard price of the device, making it quite a bad deal if you buy it from the carrier outright.

The Galaxy S4 mini sports a 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 processor, 1.5GB RAM, 4.3-inch qHD display, 8-megapixel camera, 8GB of internal storage and a microSD slot, Wi-Fi, HSPA+, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, and LTE connectivity, a 1,900mAh battery, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
