Samsung Galaxy Note III coming to Three UK on September 16th, leaked internal doc reveals

It was only a couple of days back when a rumor indicated the launch date of the Galaxy Note III in Taiwan would be September 27, with pre-orders starting as early as September 16. Now, it looks like the latter date is when the device will go up for pre-order worldwide, as a leaked roadmap of UK carrier Three has revealed.

The roadmap lists the Galaxy Note III as arriving on September 16th, and also notes that it will not be "announced until 4th September," the day we all know Samsung has chosen to unveil the phablet and the Galaxy Gear smartwatch. Oh, and the roadmap also states the announcement of the Sony Xperia Z1 will be on the 4th as well, confirming that Sony is looking to steal a bit of the thunder of Samsung's event (though whether they are really successful at it remains to be seen).

Of course, there's still the question of when consumers will actually get the Note III in their hands, but the previous rumor and the leaked roadmap suggests that at least pre-orders will start around the same time the world over. Fingers crossed for an actual launch before September ends (though the U.S. launch will most likely be later on in October or November at a dedicated event).

Samsung Galaxy Note III display panel leaks out in pictures yet again

note-3-display-panel-feature

Well, it looks like Samsung is freely handing out the display panel of the Galaxy Note III, as the display panel of the device has appeared in leaked pictures a third time in the last couple of days. The pictures show both the black and white color panels, which are the colors the device will be initially available in (followed by pink and perhaps others).

Again, it's noticeable right off the bat that we're basically looking at a taller Galaxy S4, and previously seen pictures revealed that it will be similar in size to the Galaxy Note II, but a little taller and with thinner bezels (that let Samsung keep the width the same as the Note II's). However, the newest pictures look kinda fake and more like concepts, not to mention the positions of the back and menu button have switched, which makes me think we might not be looking at actual Note III display panels here.

But hey, it's not long before what's right and what's made-up is revealed to use, so let's just refrain from too much speculation for now. What do you guys think? Are these pictures fake or could they be the real deal?

s4-zoom-feature

Less than a day after posting its kernel source, Samsung has announced that the LTE-enabled Galaxy S4 Zoom is now available commercially in Europe, and will soon be making its way to the UK. The LTE model supports multi-band 4G, and will be compatible with both old and new 4G networks thanks to its support for six different bands.

"The introduction of LTE capabilities to the Galaxy S4 Zoom demonstrates our commitment to providing customers with the best possible product on the market," said Simon Stanford, vice president of the IT and mobile division at Samsung UK. "Today's consumers place great importance on being connected with their world, a need that is catered for with the LTE technology. It's powerful, stylish and is perfect for those who want to take outstanding pictures from a device that's always with them and then share them immediately and easily."

The specs of the device remain the same as before, mainly a 1.5GHz-dual-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD (960 x 540) screen, 8GB of storage and a microSD slot, Wi-Fi, HSPA, Bluetooth, and NFC connectivity, a 2,330mAh battery, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Its main feature, the protruding camera on the back (or front?), will still take 16-megapixel photos, and includes a 10x optical zoom lens, image stabilization, Xenon Flash, and lots of camera modes accessible via the Zoom Ring.

Don't forget to check out our review of the Galaxy S4 Zoom here.

Galaxy Gear smartwatch to come in 6 and 8GB models with only 10 hours battery life?

samsung-watch-front-screen

Each day we tick off the calendar takes us closer to the formal unveiling of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, and while we already know most of its specs and even the colors it will be available in, some new info reveals details on its storage space and battery life. According to AmongTech, the Galaxy Gear will come in 6GB and 8GB models, and will feature only 10 hours of battery life.

While some will point out that it's odd there's a 6GB model instead of a 4GB one as is the norm, what's even more odd (and worrying) here is that battery life. 10 hours just seems too low, with smartphones lasting upwards of 15 hours on average, so it wouldn't be the greatest thing if the smartwatch runs out of juice before you even get home from work. Hopefully, the 10 hours of battery life is only on extremely heavy usage (though it remains to be seen what heavy usage on a smartwatch would include), so keep your fingers crossed for this one.

AmongTech also confirms other specs, like a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 2.5-inch OLED display of 320 x 320 resolution, 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, and Android Jelly Bean. The camera is pointed out to be a 4-megapixel sensor, and there will be speakers in the watch's strap.

What do you guys think? If that battery life rating turns out to be correct, would you still be interested in buying the Galaxy Gear, or will you wait for the second-generation version?

Screenshot of Galaxy Gear smartwatch’s ‘Gear Manager’ Android app leaked

samsung-watch-side

Alright, it seems it is time for the real and concrete leaks that we all wanted regarding Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Gear smartwatch – leakster extraordinaire evleaks has leaked the screenshot of the official companion app of the smartwatch, which users will use on their Galaxy smartphone to control various aspects of the watch.

Right off the bat, the screenshot confirms that the model number of Gear will be SM-V700. The app – called Gear manager – will give the option to pair your phone with the watch automatically via NFC or via manual Bluetooth setup before letting you set personal settings on the watch. There are options for Clocks, My apps, Samsung Apps, Find my watch, Settings, and Help, which should do exactly what the names suggest, though we'll naturally need to wait for the app to be officially released before finding out what all the options do (especially interesting will be the apps that the watch will run).

There are only five days to go before the Galaxy Gear becomes official, and we wouldn't be surprised if all the details leak out in the few days that are left. Anyone excited yet, or does that 10 hour battery life still scare you?

More languages coming to S Voice soon, including Greek

SVoice-feature

Samsung introduced its voice assistant S Voice after Apple introduced Siri on iOS, and while it works well enough (though not as good as Google Now, which trumps every other digital assistant), it only supports a few languages, making speech recognition an exercise in futility for people in many parts of the world. However, support for more languages should be arriving to S Voice in the near future, according to myphone.gr.

According to an ad published on the site, a Chinese company – Speech Ocean - is currently looking for volunteers who can read and speak Greek, in order to improve support for the language in S Voice. The project will reportedly be carried out in Athens, and participants will be paid an undisclosed sum for the one hour sessions that take place. While the ad only mentions Greek, we'll probably see a few other languages get better support as well, though when that support will officially arrive remains to be seen.

How many of you actually use S Voice and would be interested to see support for your language?

Thanks, Anonymous tipster!

Samsung Galaxy NX headed to the U.S. in October with $1,599 price tag

galaxy-nx-feature-1

Samsung has been slowly expanding the availability of its dedicated Android-powered camera, the Galaxy NX, ever since it was announced back in June, and the Korean manufacturer has now revealed that the NX will be arriving in the U.S in October. The price tag will start at $1,599, or $1,699 if you want it with an 18-55mm zoom less.

The Galaxy NX sports a 20.3-megapixel sensor with a mirrorless (i.e. digital instead of mirror-based) optical viewfinder and 1/6000 shutter speed, and comes with interchangeable lens system. The camera runs on Android 4.2, giving it access to the entire Android ecosystem and its huge collection of apps, with a plethora of features on the camera side of things, including more than 30 smart modes.

Photos can be viewed on a large 4.8-inch HD display, and shared with others via Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G LTE networks. Underneath there's a 1.6GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and a huge 4,360mAh battery.

Galaxy Note III to sport LCD display and 8MP camera in emerging markets?

Posted by Unknown

Posted by Abhijeet M. on 29 August 2013 at 16:29

note-2-3-display-frame-compare-feature

Here's the latest rumor regarding the Galaxy Note III – a report by ETNews claims that Samsung might put an LCD display on the Note III for emerging markets, and might also replace the 13-megapixel camera with an 8-megapixel unit, in order to achieve a stable supply of the necessary parts. Well, since we're not at all adept at the Korean language, that's what we could make out after translating the report to English.

The report also seems to mention that the LCD-sporting Note III variant will account for 30 percent of the initial production volume of the upcoming phablet. The decisions have apparently been taken to reduce the production costs, in order to reduce overall prices for the price-conscious consumers in said emerging markets.

However, speculation like this has been made in the past as well, but Samsung has always used an AMOLED display on its flagship devices since the original Galaxy Note, so take the report with the customary pinch of salt. But if Samsung does adopt an LCD display and / or an 8-megapixel camera for the Note III in emerging markets, well, that won't be nice. At all.

Broadcom CEO says Samsung and Apple may not dominate smartwatch market

Posted by Unknown

Posted by Abhijeet M. on 29 August 2013 at 15:41

Scott-McGregor-Broadcom-feature

With Samsung and Apple creating almost half of all smartphones being sold in the world, many think the two companies will be equally big in the smartwatch and wearable device market that's set to bloom over the coming months. However, Broadcom CEO Scott McGregor doesn't believe either will dominate the smartwatch industry as they have the smartphone market, but will have to play along with a lot of other players making wearable tech.

In an interview with AllThingsD, McGregor said:

"There are, like, two companies that make half of all the smartphones on the planet. I think wearables are going to be different."

McGregor takes the example of the various crowd-funded Kickstarter backed smartwatches that serve various niches, and says that the wearable product market is a lot bigger and will see a lot of small groups and companies coming up with their own take. Broadcom is even looking to supply its chips to these new and upcoming players, and also believes design will play a bigger role in smartwatches than it has in mobile.

While McGregor makes a good point, we do have to take into accounting the marketing power of both Apple and Samsung, and when you look at the number of devices the latter has on the market, smartwatches that communicate with those devices will be a great advantage card to dangle in front of prospective consumers. As for Apple, just the fact that its smartwatch will act as an accessory for the iPhone, which already enjoys the largest collection of third-party accessories, will be enough to give it an upper edge over the competition.

But then again, wearable tech and smartwatches are going to be new product categories, so we simply need to wait and watch who dominates the market and who has to play second fiddle to the big boys.

Samsung Galaxy S5 to have metal chassis, production line starting at end of year?

samsung-logo-booth_1-360x270

Well, the rumor mongering never stops, even if a device is quite far away from being released. It was recently rumored that the Galaxy S5 could sport a 16-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization, but the latest rumor is something that will make a lot of people even more excited – a report by ETNews claims that Samsung may be looking to use a metal chassis on its next flagship smartphone.

The report also claims that Samsung is looking to start a production line later this year to create those metal chassis, with a sample produced in Europe sent for testing to Vietnam earlier this year. Samsung is reportedly treading lightly and is looking to minimize effects of a metal housing, such as on the antenna reception (Apple's "death grip" on iPhone, remember that?). Hopefully, things like removable batteries and expandable storage are being focused on, too.

Of course, we've all heard this one before so there's no assurance that we won't see plastic construction yet again. As always, there's considerable time before the Galaxy S5 makes its way to market, so it's best not to take these rumors seriously, though you're always free to get excited.

Here's hoping Samsung is working on a new design as well.

Samsung Galaxy Note III launching in Taiwan on September 27?

Posted by Unknown on Wednesday, August 28, 2013

Posted by Abhijeet M. on 28 August 2013 at 14:55

samsung-logo-booth_1-360x270

Samsung usually launches flagship devices as soon as it announces them, and we had confirmed that the Galaxy Note III would start shipping in September a few days after its formal unveiling. However, we may have the first concrete date for the Note III's launch thanks to a new rumor from ePrice, which states the phablet will launch in Taiwan on September 27th.

The device will reportedly go on pre-order as early as September 16, though ePrice says that the dates might change, but there shouldn't be any major changes in schedule. Taiwan is usually one of the first nations to get new handsets, but going by Samsung's recent track record, we should see it become available in other markets around the same time (well, provided the Taiwan release date checks out, though ePrice is usually on the money with rumors).

The Galaxy Note III will sport a 5.68-inch Full HD 1080p Super AMOLED display (we earlier saw what is allegedly the handset's display frame), a octa-core Exynos / quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM, 13-megapixel rear camera, 32/64GB storage and a microSD slot, 3,200mAh battery, and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Why Samsung should watch out for China

Posted by Unknown

Posted by Abhijeet M. on 28 August 2013 at 17:47

Samsung-Logo-with-Galaxy-Tab_Logo

Smartphones from China are generally cheap, and pack a great punch. The South-Korean based Samsung is still the world's biggest manufacturer of smartphones however. But if they want to hold that throne in the future, they might have to step up their game.

The so-called Copy to China model – which describes how Chinese companies copy the practices of western businesses – is seemingly disappearing from the worldwide smartphone market. Take Oppo for instance: it was among the first companies that implemented a Full HD screen in its Oppo Find 5, and is one of the first that is going to implement a touchable area on the back of a smartphone, with its unannounced Oppo N1. They don't just copy; they are among the innovators.

Because of that, these Oppo smartphones are a great example of the danger Chinese smartphones currently pose to the success of Samsung's mobile endeavors. A simple comparison between the Oppo R819 and the Galaxy S4 Mini already shows this: you get a resolution of 720×1280 instead of 540×960 (on a slightly bigger screen), just a little less RAM (1GB instead of 1.5GB), a 1.2GHz quad-core instead of a 1.7GHz dual-core, and a 2000 mAh battery instead of one with 1900 mAh. They are quite alike, but Oppo's alternative is quite cheaper.

The Oppo R819 costs you 269 Euros; add just over a 100 Euros to that total and you can get a Galaxy S4 Mini. The same price difference applies when you compare the Oppo Find 5 to the spec-wise comparable Samsung flagship Galaxy S4. Oppo isn't even the cheapest smartphone maker on the market right now, but some models from other Chinese players – like those of Xiaomi – aren't easy to get your hands on beyond the Great Wall of China.

So, a lot of bang for your buck for a smaller amount of bucks is the gist of it. What's not to like? You get to touch the high-end range of the smartphone market and won't even get shafted anymore, with mediocre hardware and/or materials. Phones like the Oppo R819 even let you operate on stock Android from the get-go, a big plus for some of the more die-hard Android aficionados.

There are always some downsides of course. China isn't completely there yet. In some cases the translation of the software is lacking, to say the least, and some manufacturers are clearly trying to emulate Apple's or Samsung's look. Availability is also a sore spot. Most people still get their phones when they are looking for a new wireless plan, and don't want to bother with eventual import fees and the hassle that comes with an imported smartphone.

However, these blemishes are easily fixed, and Samsung needs to be ready for the moment that happens. A simple price cut here and there would be a start, but Samsung has better weapons up its sleeve than that. It still has one of the most recognizable smartphone brands there is, with popular devices in almost every price range and for almost every niche. (I'm looking at you, Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom.)

To add to that: Samsung's TouchWiz is of one of the most user-friendly versions of Android around. It is also 'westernized' enough to have a wide appeal over here. The straightforward user interface and additional features TouchWiz provides aren't exactly adored by all Samsung buyers, but apps like Samsung's ChatON really show how Samsung is trying to provide its own, streamlined Android experience. You can't say that about most Chinese smartphone makers, yet, with their sometimes shaky translations and unattractive Android experiences. (Hello to you too, Huawei.)

Like I said: China isn't there yet, but definitely getting there. When all the Chinese up-and-comers really get their game on in the west – like Huawei is doing right now – it might be time for Samsung to brace itself. Luckily, the current king of the Android phone market has enough means at its disposal to keep itself ahead.

Samsung reportedly reduces orders for 10.1-inch tablet components

Posted by Unknown

Posted by Abhijeet M. on 28 August 2013 at 19:23

samsung-logo

There was a time when the iPad was the only tablet worth spending your money on, and Samsung (and other manufacturers) naturally followed with their own takes on the 10-inch tablet. They weren't too successful, but the real blow came when Google launched the Nexus 7, which created a whole new 7-inch tablet market that saw demand for 10-inch tablets go lower and lower, prompting even Apple to launch a smaller iPad (which, as Apple loves to tell us, is not a crowd follower and is awesome at 7.8-inches.)

Now, it seems Samsung is finally understanding that 10-inch tablets aren't something consumers are looking for, and has reportedly reduced orders for components used in tablets of that size.

Samsung Electronics has reduced orders for components used in 10.1-inch tablets, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers, because 10.1-inch tablet sales have been far below expectations due to strong competition from 7-inch models.

While 10-inch tablets have their uses, the convenience and portability of 7-inchers is something that has made them immensely popular, and it looks like Samsung might begin to reduce the number of products based on the unwanted screen size (not that there are many, but we might never see a Galaxy Note 10.1 II, though that Note 8.0 is still an option for those wanting an S Pen-toting tablet).

Well, there's still that 12.2-inch tablet Samsung (and Apple) is working on so they've not completely learnt their lesson, but hey, I'm sure there are people out there that want to lug around such gigantic tablets.

Report: JK Shin personally ordered first Tizen smartphone’s delay

Posted by Unknown

Posted by Abhijeet M. on 28 August 2013 at 21:06

Baliho TIZEN

Initially expected to be launched sometime in the third quarter this year, the first Tizen smartphone was later delayed to the last quarter, with rumors hinting at a launch in late October. Now, a report claims that it was co-CEO JK Shin himself had ordered the first Tizen device to be delayed, in order to give the company time to create "the best smartphone."

Samsung was said to be testing Tizen on a Galaxy S3, hinting at the first Tizen phone using the S3′s hardware, but those plans were apparently scrapped to keep up with the changing hardware trends (hopefully, that doesn't mean Tizen needs high-end hardware to offer a good experience). Samsung engineers were reportedly quick to point out that the delay doesn't mean there are any issues with the OS, but that they only want to make it as good and feature-packed as possible before putting the first Tizen device out in the market.

Well, I guess we'll see how good it really is whenever it launches. Fingers crossed that the extra time Samsung is taking translates into an actually nice device coupled with equally good software, even if the market might not be too embracing of a fourth ecosystem (not that that will deter Samsung).

It was said that the Note III won't be much bigger than the Note II, and now an image comparing the display frames of the two devices side by side backs up that claim. The image has been manually constructed, but it does give us a good idea of the differences and similarities between the two devices.

As you can see, the new Note's display frame seems to be just a tad taller than the Note II's, but when it comes to the width, both seem to be the same. Samsung has achieved this by reducing the bezel around the display to just 2.2mm, so handling the next-generation Note should be similar to the Note II (no, you still won't be able to drag down that status bar in one-hand usage).

note-2-3-display-frame-compare

Well, provided that display frame in the images really does belong to the Galaxy Note III. It most likely does, but better to be skeptical until official confirmation comes along.

Well, you can swap it with a designer battery cover provided you reside in Hungary. The cover you're seeing below is designed by Sandra Sándor, who is the head designer of the fashion label Nanushka. These uniquely designed covers will be available in stores and will cost about HUF 5990 or about USD 27.

Furthermore, in mid-September Samsung also plans to release a design tool on their Facebook page that will allow users to customise battery covers for older devices and will sell for HUF 7200 to up to 8500 depending on the model.

According to the website, the display size measures at 5.68-inches, which is the size we'd had confirmed earlier along with other specs. Compared to the Note 2, the screen has a few changes. The sides of the screen are more like the S4 (which isn't surprising), and the border is slimmer at 2.2mm. The total thickness of the display is apparently also really thin, at 1.8mm, so overall this shouldn't be much larger than last year's Note.

I would love to tell you that it's possible that display panel is from a prototype Note III that Samsung is using to hide the real design, but I guess that would be a lie. Samsung is most likely going ahead with the same look on the Note III as the S4 and last year's devices, and it's just over a week left before we get to take an official look at it.

Galaxy Tab 3 Kids aims to make learning more fun with features tailored for kids. While the tablet is essentially Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 when it comes to hardware, the Galaxy Tab 3 Kids is pre-loaded with a brand new Kid's Store and content ranging from educational, games, entertainment and e-book apps. The tablet also gives parents the liberty what apps they want their kids to have access to, Time Management which automatically password protects the tablet after a specific time period and a case that offers a better grip, multiple standing options and C Pen, which is a kid-friendly pen to doodle on the tablet.

Galaxy Tab 3 Kids' hardware includes 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB RAM, 8GB memory, 3 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Full HD video playback and 4000mAh battery.

Samsung will release the tablet first in its home market as expected followed by other regions.

Sure, there's no way to know it but SonnyDickson.com seems to have gotten some images from their "trusted source" in China who claims these belong to the Galaxy Note III. The panel marks Samsung Display's logo and a Synaptics chip, suggesting the device will use a Synaptics touch sensor.

There's no info on the size of the display but going by the previous information, we expect it to be 5.68-inch with a full HD resolution support.

Samsung's executive today confirmed that the Galaxy Note III and Galaxy Gear will be announced at the September 4 event in Berlin, Germany before IFA.

Well, you have it now, straight from the executive vice president of Samsung's mobile business, Lee Young-hee, who also confirmed that the Galaxy Gear won't have a flexible display and will run on Android.

That's all the executive confirmed, but previous rumors already tell us what to expect from both devices. The Galaxy Gear will come in multiple colors, pair with Samsung's smartphones through Bluetooth and NFC, include a lot of sensors for use in applications like health tracking, and launch sometime in October.

As for the Galaxy Note III, the 5.68-inch phablet will sport a 1080p Super AMOLED display, a quad-core Snapdragon 800 or octa-core Exynos 5420 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and a microSD slot, 13-megapixel rear camera, a 3,200mAh battery, and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. An S Pen will be included for pen input, and the device will start shipping in September.

So, just a week to go before Samsung unveils its next hero devices. Here's hoping we're greeted with awesomeness.

When it comes to display makers, the recent trend of larger displays will be a huge advantage this year, as their revenues are set to rise by 55 percent.

A DigiTimes report touts the Galaxy S4 as one of the handsets that are part of the reason for the increased revenues, along with Apple's iPhone 5. The S4′s display went up 0.2-inches from the S3′s and also saw a veritable increase in display resolution – coupled with the average selling price of an AMOLED screen rising from $48.36 in 2012 to $49.37 in 2013, it's something that is proving profitable for display makers. By the end of the year, AMOLED screens will have taken 37 percent of the total market, and the Galaxy Note III will no doubt contribute to that share.

Samsung has also kicked off some marketing initiatives for Europe and will showcase the TV in Samsung Branded Store in Frankfurt, Germany and Vienna Albertina Muesem in Austria.

Samsung also gave away the first Curved OLED TV in Europe to FC Bayern Munich on the eve of 50th anniversary of German football league 'Bundesliga'.

The Curved OLED TV boasts impressive picture quality with good colour reproduction and deep blacks. The TV supports 1080p Full HD resolution, 3D support, Smart Hub, MultiView, Evolution Kit and 'Timeless Arena' design where the display is placed in a frame, thus giving a floating dipslay-like effect.

The Curved OLED TV will sell for 7,999 euros.

That's where extended batteries and battery packs come in, and now Galaxy S4 owners can extend their phone's battery life with the Mophie Juice Pack.

The Mophie Juice Pack is basically a case with an inbuilt battery, which charges your phone to extend its usage times. The S4 Juice Pack comes with a 2,300mAh battery (~80% of the standard S4 battery), and will add 13 hours of talk time, 6 hours of browsing, 35 hours of audio playback and 7 hours of video playback to the phone. A 4 LED indicator gives you the status of the battery, and the phone can be charged and synced without having to take it out of the case.

Galaxy Note III display frame compared with Note II’s

note-2-3-display-frame-compare-feature

Yesterday, images showing off the display frame of the Galaxy Note III cropped up online, revealing screen size and other dimensions of the display.

Well, provided that display frame in the images really does belong to the Galaxy Note III. It most likely does, but better to be skeptical until official confirmation comes along.
